about
Sunny J. Amerine, M.Ed. is an educator specializing in ADHD, anxiety, executive function, and individualized learning support.

Message from Sunny
My passion for learning erupted in 1983. I was 12.
I was sitting in a half-empty classroom while the gifted kids were spending the night at an aquarium, writing research papers about nocturnal sea life. The kids labeled as trouble were in a special behavioral session. And the rest of us — the middle ground — were doing worksheets.
I remember thinking, I would learn more in one night at that aquarium than I will ever learn from this worksheet.
And isn't that gifted thinking?
Nobody asked me. Nobody asked any of us. In that system, the aquarium had to be earned.
I believe learning shouldn't have to be earned. It should be experienced. It should be alive. It should connect to who you actually are.
That memory is why I created SOAR.
Because I know what it feels like to be the student nobody quite knows what to do with. Not struggling enough for intervention. Not exceptional enough for the special trip. Capable of so much more than the worksheet sitting in front of you.
After decades of working with learners, I have come to believe that many students who struggle with ADHD, anxiety, executive function, focus, or traditional academics don't need more pressure. They need someone to help them understand how they learn.
That's what we do in SOAR.
We figure out what gets your brain interested, what shuts it down, what helps information stick, and what strategies actually work for you. Then we use that understanding to make school, studying, organization, and learning feel less threatening and much more possible.
I hold a B.S. in Family and Consumer Science and a Master of Education in Counseling and Human Development, with advanced study in integrative health, nervous system regulation, sensory wellness, psychology, anatomy and physiology, mindfulness, and somatic practices. I am also a doctoral student in Integrative Health.
I'm the mother of six children, three of whom have learning disabilities, and our family has homeschooled, unschooled, navigated traditional school, fostered, adopted, and learned a great deal outside the lines.
I don't believe there is one right way to learn.
I believe there is a way you learn.
And finding it can change everything. Text 808-997-2122 for more information and scheduling!

What to Expect
What to Expect at Your First SOAR Session
Your first visit to The Nest is intentionally easygoing.
There are no intimidating assessments, no pressure to perform, and no expectation that you arrive knowing exactly what is wrong or what you need.
We start by getting comfortable.
The Nest is a cozy, low-stimulation learning space designed to feel very different from a classroom or clinical office. We’ll talk about what is going well, what feels hard, what you enjoy, what you avoid, and what tends to happen when learning becomes frustrating or overwhelming.
I’ll also want to know what you think about the way you learn.
Because that matters.
During your first session, we may explore:
-
current schoolwork, assignments, or academic concerns
-
organization, planning, and follow-through
-
attention and focus patterns
-
procrastination and overwhelm
-
study habits and learning preferences
-
sensory needs and environmental distractions
-
strengths, interests, and the things that naturally capture your attention
-
what happens in your body when learning begins to feel stressful
Depending on the student, I may incorporate simple tools such as breathwork, acupressure points, movement, sensory supports, manipulatives, visual organization, games, or hands-on learning activities while we work.
Nothing is forced.
The goal of the first session is not to label you or fix you.
It is to begin figuring out how your brain learns best and what I can change, introduce, simplify, or support to make learning work better for you.
By the end of the intake, we’ll have a clearer idea of where to begin and what future SOAR Study Sessions might look like.
Come as you are.
Bring schoolwork if you have it.
Bring questions if you have them.
Bring absolutely no idea what you need if that’s where you are.
We can start there.
